Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian was born in Canada but grew up in the US. She's worked as an editor since the year 1995. Feminist Frequency is a site with video and an online blog analysing portrayals female characters in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian was a Canadian as well as an American feminist media critique. Feminist Frequency - a not-for profit site for education that investigates female representations in popular culture narratives - is created and directed by Sarkeesian. She's determined to dismantle stereotypes about women and how they are depicted in pop culture. Furthermore she aims to create awareness of online harassment directed at women and the marginalized communities of people. Sarkeesian who has an MA in the field of Social and Political Thinking from York University, is a sought after public speaker. She has spoken at TEDxWomen's XOXO Festival and the United Nations Broadband Working Group to Gender. When she was a student at the university Sarkeesian was fascinated by the issue of gender and rights for women at an early stage. Someone who hoped to start a web-series examining the gender representation of video games was targeted by an internet-based campaign. But the harassment did not dissuade her. She was only able to strengthen her position as a journalist who is feminist. Her numerous contributions to the field of feminist were recognized by a variety of prizes. Anita Sarkeesian, a media journalist who has received many awards, and also founded Feminist Frequency, an educational nonprofit that studies the way women are depicted in media narratives.
